Close your eyes now and think of a relaxing vacation. Let go and submit to the calming sounds of the waves and the birds flying over the crystal clear waters. Koi Samui is the perfect holiday destination for people who want to unwind and get a break from their everyday stress.
Every year, Ko Samui receives thousands of travelers who are planning to spend amazing time in their luxury villas, elegant bungalows, and resort rooms. There are different accommodation options, giving you a chance to enjoy the beauty of its wonderful beaches regardless of your budget.
Welcome to Lamai Beach:
Lamai Beach is the second largest beach in Ko Samui. It lies 1 hour and a half to the south of the longest one; Chaweng Beach. Lamai Beach is part of Lamai village which lies on the east coast of Ko Samui.
Lamai Beach is typically long and the depth of the water varies; getting deeper as you head to the south. Starting from the north and next to the headland, the water is rocky and shallow. The beach is usually quiet and there are not many activities to do.
The southern part of the beach is more popular and live. It has a wide strip of sand where beachgoers can spend time relaxing and tanning. The water is deep enough for swimming and there are various eating, drinking and shopping options that offer different services to travelers.
How to Get to Lamai Beach?
Going to Lamai Beach is quite easy and there are different options that suit various budgets. A minibus from the airport costs 150 baht per person while a private taxi costs anywhere between 300 and 400 baht. Most honeymooners prefer to hire a private taxi for privacy concerns but a minibus is more suitable for budget travelers.
You can also take a minibus from the ferry terminal which normally costs 60 baht. Nevertheless, this price is only paid by locals while tourists usually pay around 100 baht.
A songthaew is a local means of transportation that you can only see in Thailand and other countries like Laos. It is an adapted vehicle from a pickup and can be used as a shared taxi by the locals and tourists. You can take share one with the locals from the pier for 70 baht. Bear in mind that it will cost so much more if you decided to hire it privately.
Just Dive in and Let Go:
There is nothing that compares to the relaxing feeling of hopping into the beautiful water of the Lamai Beach. Most accommodation options are rather expensive because the Lamai Beach is always high in demand. But you can walk around the village to find cheap and basic rooms. Unfortunately, online booking is not usually available for those.
No diving is available on the beach but you have to travel to Ko Tao. There are a lot of dive shops available that offer diving courses suitable for both the bubble maker and the expert diver. Some dive shops cost relatively more than the others, so you’ve got to do some research to make sure that you are hiring a trustworthy service.
There is More To It:
We know that the beach water is extremely tempting, but there are a lot of other activities that you can do if you are getting tired or bored of swimming all day long.
You can hire a motorbike or a jeep to explore the surrounding areas if you are looking for something different. Head to the south towards Hua Thanon village; the old fishing village with traditional wooden houses lining the road. Just before your destination, you will arrive at 2 famous rock formations. The Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks lie very close to each other and resemble the male and female genitalia respectively. In the local language, the name means the Grandpa and Grandma Rocks. There is an interesting local legend on how these 2 rocks formed.
Discover the History of Lamai
As you travel to the south, you will arrive at a fishing village called Hua Thanon. This represents the old Samui before it became a popular tourist destination. You can enjoy the view of livestock grazing peacefully and grab a quick Thai snack in one of the roadside cafes.
Wat Lamai Temple hosts temple fairs that usually last for one week. If you arrive at Lamai at a time of one of them, it will be a great idea to pay the temple a visit. The Cultural Hall contains an interesting collection of ancient artifacts, some of them dating back as far as 2000 years ago. Unfortunately, there are no notes in English, so you will have to rely on your imagination of the explanations by a friendly local.
You can also see the mummified body of a monk who died about 20 years ago. Upon his request, his body was placed in a special glass cage. Tourists and locals can still see his body which shows very little signs of decay.
After the Sunset:
On Sundays, Walking Street hosts a lot of live music shows and interesting activities for children. On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays you attend a concert by the Ovada Showband; a Pilipino band that plays excellent music. The mood is inviting and uplifting as everyone gets to dance and enjoy the night.
Shopping at Lamai is an interesting cultural experience. Most shops will charge 5 times the original price for tourists so you need to stick to bargaining your way out. The shopkeepers are friendly so that shouldn’t be a real problem. You might also want to check several shops before you anything since most of them sell the same products.
If you are missing your good old McDonald’s, you can find it nearby next to the night market which opens every day at 6 pm. At the night market, you can find a lot of beautiful jewelry, artifacts and, handmade souvenirs.
You can also find Tesco supermarket and a small mall where you can find anything you need on your vacation. If your meals are not included at your travel accommodation, this is a great place to buy your own food.
Dining at Lamai is an excellent cultural experience. You can find anything you can think of from expensive international dishes to local cheap and tasty dishes like in the restaurant offered by Koh Fit Thailand. The food stalls open from 4 pm until midnight and offer a lot of food options. You can also find some amazing spots to grab a drink after a long day on the beach.
Visiting Lamai Beach is a unique traveling experience. It is the perfect holiday spot whether you are traveling alone or with a group of friends. Just book your next flight and let yourself go. The best vacation is waiting for you.
